Abstract
This study aims to explore the impact of public self-consciousness on body dysmorphic symptoms, taking the potential mediation of appearance-based rejection sensitivity and body image psychological inflexibility into consideration. Self-reported survey responses of 352 adults are collected and analyzed. To measure the variables, the PSCS (Public Self-Consciousness Scale), Appearance-RS (Appearance-Based Rejection Sensitivity Scale), K-BIPIS (Korean version of the Body Image Psychological Inflexibility Scale), and BICI (Body Image Concern Inventory) are included in the survey. Correlation coefficients among the major variables are reported to understand their potential associations. To analyze the sequential dual mediating effects, SPSS PROCESS macro Model 6 is used. The major findings of this study are as follows. First, the PSCS, Appearance-RS, K-BIPIS, and BICI variables are all significantly correlated in a positive direction. Second, the sequential dual mediating effects of the Appearance-RS and K-BIPIS variables on PSCS and BICI are statistically significant. Based on the results of this study, it was confirmed that public self-consciousness could increase the development of appearance-based rejection sensitivity, and that leads to an increase in body image psychological inflexibility, leading to body dysmorphic symptoms. Also, we expanded our understanding of the variables related to body image and therapeutic method was discussed to help prevent the high level of public self-consciousness from leading to body dysmorphic symptoms.
